How It Works

1. Plug it in

AirLink draws power from any USB port on your network's premises. Plug it into the computer you want to wake and you unlock every wake method at once — that's the setup we recommend. Plug it into a monitor, a TV, a router, or a wall charger and it still wakes machines across your network by Wake-on-LAN.

2. Connect it to Wi-Fi

Open the Magnova AirLink app, pair over Bluetooth, and hand AirLink your Wi-Fi credentials. Setup takes about a minute.

AirLink stays quietly connected to the Magnova cloud. When you tap Wake, the command travels to the dongle and the dongle wakes your machine — with a magic packet, a keypress, a mouse nudge, or all three at once.

Because AirLink lives inside your network, it reaches devices the internet can't. That's what makes remote Wake-on-LAN work without a single router change.

Wake-on-LAN is powerful but fussy: BIOS settings, adapter power management, a firmware menu that hides the option three levels deep. AirLink now sidesteps all of it — because it can wake your computer the way you would.

Wake-on-LAN — the magic packet

AirLink broadcasts a standard Wake-on-LAN magic packet across your local network. It works from any USB port on the premises, covers as many machines as you like, and it's the only method that can bring up a computer that is completely powered off or hibernated. It does need Wake-on-LAN enabled on the target machine.

Keyboard & Mouse — the nudge

Plugged into the computer you want to wake, AirLink presents itself as an ordinary USB keyboard and mouse. Tap Wake and it presses a key or nudges the pointer — exactly what you'd do at the desk. No BIOS. No adapter settings. No Wake-on-LAN at all.

This resumes a sleeping computer. It can't switch on a machine that is fully shut down, because a powered-off PC isn't listening to its USB ports. For that, use Wake-on-LAN.

Leave AirLink in the target computer and choose All, and one tap sends the magic packet, then the keypress, then the mouse nudge. If any one of them lands, your machine wakes. The app tells you which signals actually went out.

Why AirLink

What You'll Need

  • A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and any powered USB port for AirLink itself.
  • The target machine on the same local network as AirLink.
  • A way in — either one is enough:
    • a USB port on the computer you're waking, with that machine set to sleep rather than shut down; or
    • Wake-on-LAN enabled on that machine, in BIOS/UEFI and in the network adapter settings.

For the most reliable setup, do both: plug AirLink into the target computer, turn Wake-on-LAN on, and select All. Then a magic packet, a keypress, and a mouse nudge all go out on every tap.

What is the Magnova AirLink USB?

The Magnova AirLink USB is a plug-in Wi-Fi dongle that lets you wake sleeping computers on your home or office network from your phone, anywhere in the world. It wakes machines two ways: by sending Wake-on-LAN magic packets from inside your network, and by acting as a USB keyboard and mouse on the computer it's plugged into. Because it works from inside your network, there's no port forwarding, VPN, or router configuration to set up.

Do I still need to set up Wake-on-LAN?

Not if you plug AirLink into the computer you want to wake. In that setup it presents itself as an ordinary USB keyboard and mouse and resumes the machine by pressing a key or nudging the pointer — no BIOS menus, no adapter power-management settings, no Wake-on-LAN at all.

You do still need Wake-on-LAN if you want to wake a computer that is fully powered off, or wake machines AirLink isn't plugged into. Turning it on where you can is worth it: with both available, AirLink sends every signal at once and takes whichever one works.

Can AirLink turn on a computer that's completely switched off?

Only by Wake-on-LAN. The keyboard and mouse wake resumes a computer that's asleep — it can't power one on from a full shutdown, because a switched-off PC isn't enumerating its USB ports and usually isn't supplying power to them either. If you need to bring up machines from a cold, powered-off state, enable Wake-on-LAN on them; that's the one signal a switched-off machine answers.

For most people this isn't a limitation in practice: sleeping a machine and waking it is what you want anyway, since your session, open documents, and running programs are all still there.

Does AirLink have to be plugged into the computer I want to wake?

It depends which wake method you're using.

For Wake-on-LAN, no — AirLink only needs power, so any powered USB port on the premises works: a monitor, a TV, a router, a wall charger, or a different computer entirely.

For the keyboard and mouse wake, yes — AirLink has to be in a USB port on the machine you're waking, because that's how a keyboard wakes a computer.

Plugging it into the target computer is the best of both: from there it can send the keypress, the mouse nudge, and the magic packet.

How does the keyboard and mouse wake actually work?

AirLink identifies itself to your computer as a standard USB keyboard and mouse — the same class of device as the one on your desk. Your computer already knows how to be woken by a keyboard; that's built into every modern operating system and motherboard. When you tap Wake in the app, the command travels over Wi-Fi to AirLink, and AirLink presses a key or moves the pointer a fraction. Your machine resumes exactly as it would if you'd tapped the spacebar yourself.

It only ever sends that one wake input, when you ask it to. It doesn't type anything else, doesn't read your keystrokes, and has no access to your files.

Which wake method should I choose?

Choose All and stop thinking about it. AirLink sends the magic packet, then the keypress, then the mouse nudge, and your machine wakes if any one of them lands. The app reports which signals actually went out.

Pick a single method if you have a reason to: Wake-on-LAN for machines AirLink isn't plugged into or that you shut down fully, Keyboard or Mouse when Wake-on-LAN isn't available on that computer.

Will AirLink stay powered while my computer is asleep?

On most desktops, yes — USB ports typically keep supplying standby power in sleep, which is exactly why a keyboard can wake the machine. AirLink stays powered and stays on your Wi-Fi, waiting.

Some machines cut USB power in sleep, or keep only certain ports live (often marked, or controlled by a BIOS setting such as "USB power in S3", "ErP Ready", or "charging port"). If AirLink shows as offline once your computer sleeps, try a different port or check that setting — or power AirLink from a wall charger or monitor and use Wake-on-LAN instead.

Will my computer see AirLink as a keyboard I have to set up?

No. It appears as a standard USB keyboard and mouse, which every operating system supports natively with no drivers and no setup. Windows may briefly show its usual "setting up a device" notice the first time; macOS may show its keyboard identification prompt, which you can dismiss. After that it's silent.

Can AirLink control my computer or type on it?

No. AirLink sends a single wake input when you tap Wake in the app, and nothing else. It has no way to read your screen, your keystrokes, or your files, and the app has no remote-control feature. Waking a machine is the entire job — once it's awake, you connect with whatever remote-access tool you already use.

Can one AirLink wake multiple computers?

Over Wake-on-LAN, yes — a single AirLink covers every machine on your local network, and you can register as many as you like: desktop, media PC, NAS, home server, lab machine. Wake each one individually from the app.

The keyboard and mouse wake works on the computer AirLink is plugged into. So if you have several machines and Wake-on-LAN is awkward on them, use one AirLink per machine.

Is there a limit on how many devices I can register?

No. Register as many computers and as many AirLink dongles as you like — there's no cap and no per-device charge. A computer can also be assigned to several dongles if it moves between networks or you want a backup.

How much does AirLink cost to run?

Nothing. The only cost is the one-time purchase of the dongle. There's no subscription, no monthly or annual fee, and no charge for the app or the Magnova cloud service that carries your wake commands. Everything the product does is included in the purchase price.

Is there a subscription fee, or are there features I'll have to unlock later?

No, to both. The Magnova AirLink app is free to download and free to use on iOS and Android, with no subscription of any kind. There's one version of the app and one version of the dongle, and everything is unlocked from the start — remote wake, every wake method, scheduling, status and history, over-the-air firmware updates. We don't gate features behind a premium plan, charge per registered computer, or limit how many wakes you can send.

Do I need port forwarding, a VPN, or a static IP?

No. Traditional remote Wake-on-LAN requires port forwarding, dynamic DNS, firewall rules, and often a static IP. AirLink needs none of them — the dongle makes its own outbound connection to the Magnova cloud, so nothing on your network is exposed to the internet.

Does AirLink wake computers connected over Wi-Fi, or only Ethernet?

This is where the keyboard wake earns its keep. Wake-on-LAN over Wi-Fi depends on the computer's wireless adapter supporting WoWLAN, which many adapters drop once the machine is fully powered off — so a Wi-Fi-only target may wake from sleep but not from shutdown, or not at all. Ethernet is the reliable path for Wake-on-LAN.

But a Wi-Fi-only machine that's asleep doesn't need Wake-on-LAN at all: plug AirLink into it and wake it with a keypress, which doesn't involve the network adapter. The AirLink dongle itself always connects over Wi-Fi.

Does AirLink work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

AirLink connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks. Most routers broadcast both bands, so this usually isn't an issue — but if your router runs a 5 GHz-only network, enable the 2.4 GHz band before setup.

How do I know whether my computer supports Wake-on-LAN?

Nearly all desktop PCs and most laptops built in the last decade support it, though it's often disabled by default. You typically enable it in two places: BIOS/UEFI, and the power management properties of your network adapter. The app includes a guided walkthrough.

If it turns out your machine doesn't support Wake-on-LAN, or you'd rather not go hunting through firmware menus, plug AirLink into that machine and use the keyboard wake instead.

Which operating systems can AirLink wake?

All of them. Wake-on-LAN happens in the network adapter and motherboard firmware, below the operating system; the keyboard wake uses the USB keyboard support that is equally universal. So AirLink wakes Windows, macOS, and Linux machines the same way, along with NAS boxes and home servers.

One small difference: when AirLink scans your network to help you find machines, Windows PCs report their names automatically, while macOS and Linux hosts usually show as an IP address and hardware vendor, so you may need to identify those yourself.

Does AirLink require drivers or software on my PC?

No. There's nothing to install. Wake-on-LAN needs no software at all, and the keyboard and mouse wake uses the built-in USB keyboard support your operating system already has.

Is AirLink secure?

Nothing on your network is exposed to the open internet. Unlike port forwarding, which opens an inbound hole in your firewall, AirLink makes an outbound connection to the Magnova cloud and only ever sends wake signals locally. The dongle doesn't intercept your network traffic and has no access to your files. When it acts as a keyboard, it sends only the single wake input you requested — it can't type anything else and it can't read what you type.

Can I use AirLink with Remote Desktop, Parsec, or TeamViewer?

Yes, and this is one of its most common uses. Remote-access tools can only connect to a machine that's already running, so a sleeping PC is invisible to them. AirLink fills that gap: wake the machine first, then connect with RDP, Parsec, TeamViewer, or anything else.

How is AirLink different from using a smart plug?

A smart plug cuts and restores power, which forces a hard shutdown and requires the PC to be configured to boot on power restoration — risky for anything with unsaved work or a running server.
