Privacy policy
Last updated: 21 September 2026
Magnova operates this store and website, including all related information, content, features, tools, products and services, in order to provide you, the customer, with a curated shopping experience. Magnova also publishes the Magnova AirLink app for iPhone and Android, operates the AirLink service that relays wake requests from the app to an AirLink USB, and writes the firmware that runs on an AirLink USB. Together, the store, the website, the app, the AirLink service and the AirLink USB firmware are the "Services". The store and website are powered by Shopify, which enables us to provide that part of the Services to you; the AirLink app and service are hosted by us on our own servers and are not part of Shopify.
This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, and disclose your personal information when you visit, use, or make a purchase or other transaction using the Services, use the AirLink app or an AirLink USB, or otherwise communicate with us. If there is a conflict between our Terms of Service and this Privacy Policy, this Privacy Policy controls with respect to the collection, processing, and disclosure of your personal information.
Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. By using and accessing any of the Services, you acknowledge that you have read this Privacy Policy and understand the collection, use, and disclosure of your information as described in this Privacy Policy.
The Magnova AirLink app
This section applies to the AirLink app, the AirLink USB and the AirLink service. It sits alongside the rest of this policy, which describes the store and website. Where this section is more specific, it applies to the app.
The short version
- The app has no account. It never asks for your name, email address, phone number or any other contact details.
- The app stores the computers you add (a name and a MAC address), the AirLink USBs you set up, and a history of wake attempts on our server, so that a wake can be routed to your USB from anywhere.
- Your Wi-Fi password never reaches us. It goes from your phone to the AirLink USB over Bluetooth and is stored only on the USB.
- The app does not collect your location, contains no analytics or advertising, does not track you across other apps or websites, and nothing collected through it is used for marketing or sold.
- You can delete everything from inside the app. An install left with nothing in it is deleted from our server automatically.
What the app does not collect
The app has no sign-up and no login. Through the app we do not collect or hold your name, email address, phone number, postal address, payment details, contacts, photos, or precise or approximate location. The app contains no analytics library, no crash reporter and no advertising SDK, and it does not use any identifier that would let us or anyone else recognise you across other apps or websites. Buying an AirLink USB from our store is a separate transaction, covered by the rest of this policy, and we do not link a store order to an app install.
What the app stores on our server, and why
The app talks to a server we operate at api.magnova.com.au. It holds the following, all tied to a random install identifier rather than to you as a person.
Install identity. On first launch the app generates a random identifier and a random secret and keeps them in your phone's secure storage (the Keychain on iOS, the Keystore on Android). The server keeps the identifier and a one-way hash of the secret. Together they stand in for an account. They are not derived from your phone's hardware, your Apple ID or your Google account, and they cannot be used to identify you outside the app.
Computers you add. For each computer: the name you give it, its MAC address, the broadcast address and port used for Wake-on-LAN, and the wake method you choose. A MAC address identifies a network adapter, not a person. We need it on the server because an AirLink USB has to be told which machine to wake when you are away from home.
AirLink USBs you set up. For each USB: an identifier assigned during setup, a one-way hash of the credential the USB uses to authenticate to our server, the name you give it, whether it is currently connected, when it was last seen, the firmware version it is running, its IP address on your home network, whether it is plugged into a powered-on computer, and the progress of any firmware update. This is what lets the app show you which USBs are online and route wakes to the right one.
Wake history. Each time you tap Wake, the app records which computer, which USB (if any), whether the packet was sent from your phone or relayed through a USB, the wake method, whether it succeeded, a short result message, and the time. Wakes sent from your phone on your own Wi-Fi are recorded too, so the history you see in the app is complete. Nothing about the content of your computer or your network activity is recorded.
Network scan results. If you ask an AirLink USB to scan its network to fill in a computer's MAC address, the USB reports the IP address, MAC address and, where available, the hostname of each device it finds. This list passes through our server to your phone and is not stored on the server.
Connection data. Like any internet service, our server and hosting provider see the IP address of your phone and of your AirLink USB when they connect, and keep ordinary connection logs for a short time for security and troubleshooting. We do not use these to build a profile of you.
What stays on your phone or your AirLink USB
- Wi-Fi name and password. During setup the app sends these to the USB over Bluetooth, along with the address of our server and the USB's own credential. They are stored only in the USB's memory. Our server never receives your Wi-Fi password, and the app does not keep a copy after setup.
- A local copy of your lists. The app caches your computers and USBs on the phone so it opens instantly and works while your connection is restored.
- Your install identity. Kept in the phone's secure storage. On iOS this survives deleting and reinstalling the app.
Permissions the app asks for
- Bluetooth is used only to find and set up an AirLink USB. The app never scans for other Bluetooth devices and does not use Bluetooth in the background.
- Local network (iOS) lets the app broadcast a Wake-on-LAN packet on the Wi-Fi network you are connected to. Without it, only an AirLink USB can wake your computers.
- Location (Android only) is required by Android before any app is allowed to scan for Bluetooth devices. The app does not read, store or transmit your location. It requests this permission solely because Android ties Bluetooth scanning to it.
Who we share AirLink data with
- DigitalOcean, LLC hosts the AirLink server and database. They process data on our behalf and under our instructions.
- Expo (650 Industries, Inc.) delivers over-the-air updates to the app's code. When the app checks for an update, Expo's servers receive your phone's IP address, the app version and platform. Expo does not receive any of the data described above.
- Apple and Google handle app distribution and installation under their own privacy policies. We do not receive anything about you from them beyond aggregate, anonymised download statistics.
Information collected through the app is not shared with Shopify, with our business or marketing partners, or with advertisers or data brokers, and it is not used for the marketing and advertising purposes described later in this policy.
How long we keep AirLink data, and how to delete it
- Computers and USBs stay on our server until you delete them in the app. Deleting a computer also deletes its wake history. Deleting a USB removes it from every computer it was assigned to and disconnects it from our server.
- Empty installs. An install identity with no computers and no USBs is deleted automatically after 30 days of inactivity, along with any remaining wake history. This is how the app cleans up after someone who tries it once and removes it.
- To remove everything: delete each computer and each USB in the app, then delete the app. Within about 30 days nothing associated with your install remains on our server.
- If you delete the app first, without removing your computers and USBs, those records stay on our server because we have no way of knowing you have gone. On iOS, reinstalling the app will bring them back. If you want them removed, contact us using the details at the end of this policy and tell us the name of a USB or computer and roughly when it was set up, and we will find and delete the records.
- Connection logs are kept for a short period, typically no more than 30 days, and then discarded.
Security of the AirLink service
- All traffic between the app, the AirLink USB and our server is encrypted in transit (HTTPS and secure WebSockets).
- The server stores only one-way hashes of the secrets that authenticate your phone and your USB. We cannot read them back, and a copy of our database would not let anyone impersonate your devices.
- An AirLink USB only ever makes outbound connections. Nothing on your home network is exposed to the internet, and no ports need to be forwarded.
- Firmware updates are signed before release, and a USB refuses any image that does not carry a valid signature.
- When acting as a keyboard or mouse, an AirLink USB sends one wake input when you ask for it. It cannot type anything else and cannot read what you type.
Personal Information We Collect or Process
When we use the term "personal information," we are referring to information that identifies or can reasonably be linked to you or another person. Personal information does not include information that is collected anonymously or that has been de-identified, so that it cannot identify or be reasonably linked to you. We highly recommend that you do not share your username, password or other access details with anyone else.
- Communicating with You. We use your personal information to provide you with customer support, to be responsive to you, to provide effective services to you and to maintain our business relationship with you.
- Legal Reasons. We use your personal information to comply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process, including requests from law enforcement or government agencies, to investigate or participate in civil discovery, potential or actual litigation, or other adversarial legal proceedings, and to enforce or investigate potential violations of our terms or policies.
How We Disclose Personal Information
In certain circumstances, we may disclose your personal information to third parties for legitimate purposes subject to this Privacy Policy. Such circumstances may include:
- With Shopify, vendors and other third parties who perform services on our behalf (e.g. IT management, payment processing, data analytics, customer support, cloud storage, fulfillment and shipping). For the AirLink app and service, this means DigitalOcean (hosting) and Expo (app code updates), as described in "The Magnova AirLink app" above.
- With business and marketing partners to provide marketing services and advertise to you. For example, we use Shopify to support personalized advertising with third-party services based on your online activity with different merchants and websites. Our business and marketing partners will use your information in accordance with their own privacy notices. Depending on where you reside, you may have a right to direct us not to share information about you to show you targeted advertisements and marketing based on your online activity with different merchants and websites. You can exercise your rights to opt-out of those uses here. Information collected through the AirLink app is never disclosed to business or marketing partners.
- When you direct, request us or otherwise consent to our disclosure of certain information to third parties, such as to ship you products or through your use of social media widgets or login integrations.
- With our affiliates or otherwise within our corporate group.
- In connection with a business transaction such as a merger or bankruptcy, to comply with any applicable legal obligations (including to respond to subpoenas, search warrants and similar requests), to enforce any applicable terms of service or policies, and to protect or defend the Services, our rights, and the rights of our users or others.
Relationship with Shopify
The store and website are hosted by Shopify, which collects and processes personal information about your access to and use of the store and website in order to provide and improve them for you. Information you submit to the store and website will be transmitted to and shared with Shopify as well as third parties that may be located in countries other than where you reside, in order to provide and improve the Services for you. In addition, to help protect, grow, and improve our business, we use certain Shopify enhanced features that incorporate data and information obtained from your interactions with our Store, along with other merchants and with Shopify. To provide these enhanced features, Shopify may make use of personal information collected about your interactions with our store, along with other merchants, and with Shopify. In these circumstances, Shopify is responsible for the processing of your personal information, including for responding to your requests to exercise your rights over use of your personal information for these purposes. To learn more about how Shopify uses your personal information and any rights you may have, you can visit the Shopify Consumer Privacy Policy. Depending on where you live, you may exercise certain rights with respect to your personal information here: Shopify Privacy Portal.
The AirLink app and the AirLink service are not hosted by Shopify, and no information collected through the app is transmitted to or shared with Shopify.
Third Party Websites and Links
The Services may provide links to websites or other online platforms operated by third parties. If you follow links to sites not affiliated or controlled by us, you should review their privacy and security policies and other terms and conditions. We do not guarantee and are not responsible for the privacy or security of such sites, including the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of information found on these sites. Information you provide on public or semi-public venues, including information you share on third-party social networking platforms may also be viewable by other users of the Services and/or users of those third-party platforms without limitation as to its use by us or by a third party. Our inclusion of such links does not, by itself, imply any endorsement of the content on such platforms or of their owners or operators, except as disclosed on the Services.
Children's Data
The Services are not intended to be used by children, and we do not knowingly collect any personal information about children under the age of majority in your jurisdiction. If you are the parent or guardian of a child who has provided us with their personal information, you may contact us using the contact details set out below to request that it be deleted. Because the AirLink app collects no contact details, we have no way to tell a child's install from an adult's; if you believe a child has set up the app, contact us and we will delete the associated records. As of the Effective Date of this Privacy Policy, we do not have actual knowledge that we "share" or "sell" (as those terms are defined in applicable law) personal information of individuals under 16 years of age.
Security and Retention of Your Information
Please be aware that no security measures are perfect or impenetrable, and we cannot guarantee "perfect security." In addition, any information you send to us may not be secure while in transit. We recommend that you do not use unsecure channels to communicate sensitive or confidential information to us. The specific measures we take for the AirLink service are described in "Security of the AirLink service" above. If we become aware of a data breach affecting your personal information we will act in line with the Australian Notifiable Data Breaches scheme and any other law that applies.
How long we retain your personal information depends on different factors, such as whether we need the information to maintain your account, to provide you with Services, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes or enforce other applicable contracts and policies. Retention periods for the AirLink app are set out in "How long we keep AirLink data, and how to delete it" above.
Your Rights and Choices
Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the rights listed below in relation to your personal information. However, these rights are not absolute, may apply only in certain circumstances and, in certain cases, we may decline your request as permitted by law.
- Right to Access / Know. You may have a right to request access to personal information that we hold about you.
- Right to Delete. You may have a right to request that we delete personal information we maintain about you.
- Right to Correct. You may have a right to request that we correct inaccurate personal information we maintain about you.
- Right of Portability. You may have a right to receive a copy of the personal information we hold about you and to request that we transfer it to a third party, in certain circumstances and with certain exceptions.
- Right to Opt out of Sale or Sharing for Targeted Advertising. Depending on where you reside, you may have a right to opt out of the "sale" or "share" of your personal information or to opt out of the processing of your personal information for purposes considered to be "targeted advertising", as defined in applicable privacy laws. You can exercise your rights to opt-out of those uses here. Please note that if you visit our website with the Global Privacy Control opt-out preference signal enabled, depending on where you are, we will automatically treat this as a request to opt-out for the device and browser that you use to visit the website. If we are able to associate the device sending the signal to a Shopify account, we will apply the opt out request to the account as well. To learn more about Global Privacy Control, you can visit https://globalprivacycontrol.org/. Other than the Global Privacy Control, we do not recognize other "Do Not Track" signals that may be sent from your web browser or device.
- Managing Communication Preferences. We may send you promotional emails, and you may opt out of receiving these at any time by using the unsubscribe option displayed in our emails to you. If you opt out, we may still send you non-promotional emails, such as those about your account or orders that you have made.
If you reside in the UK or European Economic Area, and subject to exceptions and limitations provided by local law, you may exercise the following rights in addition to the rights outlined above:
- Objection to Processing and Restriction of Processing: You may have the right to ask us to stop or restrict our processing of personal information for certain purposes.
- Withdrawal of Consent: Where we rely on consent to process your personal information, you have the right to withdraw this consent. If you withdraw your consent, this will not affect the lawfulness of any processing based on your consent before its withdrawal.
You may exercise any of these rights where indicated on the Services or by contacting us using the contact details provided below. To learn more about how Shopify uses your personal information and any rights you may have, including rights related to data processed by Shopify, you can visit https://privacy.shopify.com/en.
We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights. We may need to verify your identity before we can process your requests, as permitted or required under applicable law. For the AirLink app, which holds no name or contact details, verifying your identity usually means asking you for details only the owner would know, such as the names you gave your computers or USBs and when they were set up; the quickest way to delete AirLink data is from inside the app. In accordance with applicable laws, you may designate an authorized agent to make requests on your behalf to exercise your rights. Before accepting such a request from an agent, we will require that the agent provide proof you have authorized them to act on your behalf, and we may need you to verify your identity directly with us. We will respond to your request in a timely manner as required under applicable law.
Complaints
If you have complaints about how we process your personal information, please contact us using the contact details provided below. Depending on where you live, you may have the right to appeal our decision by contacting us using the contact details set out below, or lodge your complaint with your local data protection authority. In Australia, that is the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au). For the EEA, you can find a list of the responsible data protection supervisory authorities here.
International Transfers
Please note that we may transfer, store and process your personal information outside the country you live in. The AirLink server is hosted by DigitalOcean and, depending on the data centre in use, AirLink app information may be stored and processed outside Australia, the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom.
If we transfer your personal information out of the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we will rely on recognized transfer mechanisms like the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, or any equivalent contracts issued by the relevant competent authority of the UK, as relevant, unless the data transfer is to a country that has been determined to provide an adequate level of protection.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, including to reflect changes to our practices or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. We will post the revised Privacy Policy on this website, update the "Last updated" date and provide notice as required by applicable law. If a change affects what the AirLink app collects, we will also say so in the app or in the app store release notes before it takes effect.
