Why We Didn't Make the SuperAir Smaller

There is a race in small form factor PC design, and the prize is a smaller number. Eleven litres. Nine. Seven. Every year someone shaves another litre off, and the spec sheet gets more impressive.
We didn't enter that race. The SuperAir is 12 litres, and it could have been smaller — we know exactly which components we'd have had to sacrifice to get there. We just weren't willing to sacrifice them.
This is the reasoning behind that decision, because we think the constraints we chose say more about the case than any dimension does.
The brief: four things we refused to give up
Most SFF designs start with a target volume and then work out what fits inside it. We went the other way. We wrote down the four things a compact PC has to do to be worth owning, then built the smallest possible box that could do all four at once.
The list was short:
- A full-size tower CPU cooler
- A dual-slot graphics card mounted directly to the motherboard
- No PCIe riser cable
- No forced compromises on cooling
Every one of those is a constraint that pushes the case bigger. Together they set a floor on how small the SuperAir could be. That floor turned out to be 285 × 230 × 182mm.
1. A full-size tower cooler, not a low-profile one
The moment a case drops below about 80mm of CPU cooler clearance, your options collapse. You're choosing between a low-profile air cooler with a 92mm fan spinning at 2,500 RPM, or an all-in-one liquid cooler with a pump that will eventually fail.
Both work. Neither is pleasant. Low-profile coolers are loud because a small fan has to spin fast to move the same air, and they run out of thermal headroom on anything above about 120W. AIOs add cost, add a pump whine that never quite goes away, and add a failure mode that takes your CPU with it if a fitting lets go.
The SuperAir clears 155mm. That is enough for a Thermalright Peerless Assassin, a Noctua NH-U12A, a Deepcool AK400 — the same coolers people put in full towers. These are $60 parts that handle 200W-plus while spinning at fan speeds you cannot hear from a metre away, because a 120mm fan moving air slowly is fundamentally quieter than a 92mm fan moving the same air quickly.
That 155mm is the single largest contributor to the SuperAir's height. We think it's the best-spent volume in the case.
2. No riser cable
This is the constraint that most obviously separates the SuperAir from the sub-15-litre cases it competes with, and it's the one we're most stubborn about.
Almost every very small case uses a sandwich layout: the motherboard on one side, the GPU on the other, connected by a flexible PCIe riser cable that folds around the middle. It's an elegant way to save space and it's why 10-litre cases exist at all.
It also introduces problems that the spec sheet never mentions.
Cost. A riser rated for PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 is one of the more expensive small components in a build, and in Australia it's frequently the difference between a case that looks affordable and one that isn't. Many cases don't include one at all.
Signal integrity. PCIe 5.0 pushes 32 GT/s down a folded ribbon cable, and the tolerances are unforgiving. Search any SFF forum and you'll find people locking their GPU to Gen 3 in BIOS to stop link training failures, or discovering that their riser works fine until they close the case and the fold tightens. It's not universal, but it's common enough to be a known tax on sandwich builds.
Failure and reassembly. Risers kink. They work loose. Every time you take the machine apart to swap a part, you're re-seating a connector that doesn't like being re-seated.
Volume. The cable itself, plus the bend radius it needs, plus the clearance for the fold, consumes internal space. Sandwich layouts recover less volume than the marketing suggests.
In the SuperAir, the graphics card goes into the motherboard's PCIe slot. That's it. There is nothing between the GPU and the CPU but the board they're both attached to. It costs us a couple of litres in layout efficiency and it saves you money, a failure point, and an afternoon.
3. Dual-slot, and we mean it
Here we made a genuine trade, and we want to be direct about it: the SuperAir takes dual-slot GPUs up to 267mm. A 3-slot flagship will not fit.
That was deliberate. Supporting a triple-slot card means widening the case by roughly 20mm across its entire length, and that width buys capability that most people building a compact PC don't use. The cards we designed around — dual-fan 5060s, 5070s, and their equivalents — are the cards that dominate actual sales, and they're the cards that make sense in a machine you might carry to a friend's house.
If your build is centred on a 5090, the SuperAir is the wrong case and we'd rather you knew that now than after the box arrives. If it's centred on anything with two fans and two slots, you get all of that card's performance in 12 litres with no riser and no thermal penalty.
4. No forced compromises on cooling
The fourth constraint is the one the other three make possible.
"No compromises on cooling" doesn't mean the SuperAir supports every cooling method ever invented — there's no radiator mount, and that's a design decision, not an oversight. It means you are never forced into a worse option than you'd choose for a full-size build.
You don't have to buy a low-profile cooler because nothing else fits. You don't have to buy an AIO because air cooling is off the table. You use the same $60 tower cooler you'd put in a mid-tower, and the GPU uses its own factory cooler exactly as its manufacturer designed it to work.
The case's job, then, is to get air to those coolers and get heat out of the box. It does that with perforation across nearly every surface and an internal layout that keeps the CPU, GPU, and PSU in separate thermal zones, so none of them is inhaling another's exhaust. Hot air rises and leaves through the top rather than being recirculated sideways.
The result is that the SuperAir needs no case fans of its own. Not as a gimmick — because once the components can breathe and the heat has somewhere to go, adding fans to a 12-litre box mostly adds noise and turbulence. In our testing this configuration runs cooler on average than a number of actively cooled cases in the same class, and it does it in near silence.
What 12 litres actually buys you
Add it up. A 155mm cooler sets the height. A 267mm card plus its bracket sets the length. A directly-mounted GPU beside a mini-ITX board sets the width. Wrap powder-coated steel around that with as little slack as we could manage, and you get 285 × 230 × 182mm and just under 3kg empty.
We could have made it eight litres. It would have needed a riser cable, a low-profile cooler, and a compromise on either noise or temperature. It would have been a smaller number and a worse computer.
The SuperAir is the smallest case we could build that still lets you use normal parts, normally.
