Which Graphics Cards Actually Fit in a 12L Case?

The most common question we get about the SuperAir is some version of "will my GPU fit?" It's the right question to ask, and it's harder to answer than it should be, because graphics card manufacturers publish dimensions inconsistently and the industry's one attempt at a compatibility standard doesn't mean what most people think it means.

Here's the short version for the SuperAir: your card needs to be no more than 267mm long and genuinely dual-slot. Everything below is how to work out whether a specific card meets that, and why the label on the box won't tell you.


The trap: "SFF-Ready" does not mean "fits small cases"

In 2024 NVIDIA introduced an SFF-Ready Enthusiast GeForce guideline, and it's now printed on product pages and retail listings across the industry. It sounds like exactly the shortcut you want.

It isn't. The guideline permits cards up to 304mm long, 151mm tall, and 50mm thick — and 50mm is two-and-a-half slots, not two. Cases qualify by providing 312 × 154.5 × 50mm of GPU space.

Those are generous limits. An SFF-Ready card can be 37mm longer than the SuperAir accepts and half a slot thicker. The RTX 5090 Founders Edition qualifies as SFF-Ready at 304mm, and it will not fit in the SuperAir, or in a great many other cases people would reasonably call small.

The guideline was designed to stop enthusiast cards growing indefinitely, and at that it has been useful. But it describes a card that fits in a roughly 20-litre case, not a 12-litre one. If you're shopping for anything genuinely compact, treat the SFF-Ready badge as a starting filter, not an answer.


The three measurements that matter

Card length is the number everyone checks. It's also the number least likely to cause a problem on its own, because most people get it roughly right. The other two are where builds fail.

1. Length — including backplate overhang

Manufacturers usually quote PCB-to-cooler-end length. Many cards have a backplate or shroud that extends a few millimetres past that, and some have a fan shroud that overhangs the bracket end. Assume the real number is a little larger than the published one, and leave yourself 5mm of margin.

2. Thickness — measured in millimetres, not slots

"Dual-slot" has become a marketing term rather than a measurement. A true dual-slot card is about 40mm thick. Plenty of cards described as dual-slot are 42–45mm, and plenty described as 2.5-slot are 50mm.

The reliable test is the millimetre figure on the manufacturer's spec page. If they only list slots, look up the card on a third-party database that publishes actual thickness.

3. Height — including the power connector bend radius

This is the one that catches people. A card's height is measured from the PCIe bracket to the top edge, but the cable plugged into the top edge needs somewhere to go. A 12V-2x6 connector with a stiff adapter can need 30mm or more of clearance above the card before the cable can turn.

NVIDIA's own guideline explicitly includes power cable bend radius in its height figure, which tells you how often this causes problems.

If you're close on height, a 90-degree power adapter solves it, and they're inexpensive.


Where different cards land

Rather than a list that goes stale every product cycle, here's how the classes break down:

Comfortably fits. Dual-fan cards in the 60-class and equivalent — RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti, Radeon RX 9060 XT. These are overwhelmingly true dual-slot designs in the 200–250mm range, and they're the cards the SuperAir was designed around. Most models in this class fit with room to spare.

Check carefully. 70-class cards and equivalents. Some manufacturers make genuinely compact dual-slot versions of the RTX 5070 and RX 9070; others make 2.5- or 3-slot versions of the same GPU that are 300mm+. Two cards with identical names and identical performance can differ by 60mm in length and a full slot in thickness. This class is entirely about which specific model you buy.

Won't fit. Anything 2.5-slot or thicker, anything over 267mm, and effectively all 80- and 90-class cards. Founders Edition cards from the 50-series are 304mm long — dual-slot, impressively engineered, and too long. The recent crop of "slim" dual-slot 5080s and 5070 Tis from partners like PNY are a genuinely encouraging development for SFF generally, but at roughly 300mm they're aimed at larger cases than this one.

If your build is centred on a flagship card, the SuperAir is the wrong case, and we'd much rather say so here than process a return.


How to check a specific card in two minutes

  1. Find the manufacturer's product page — not the retailer's listing, which is frequently wrong or copied from a different model.
  2. Look for all three dimensions in millimetres. If the page only gives length, that's a warning sign about the rest of the specification too.
  3. Cross-check on TechPowerUp's GPU database, which publishes measured dimensions and is generally more reliable than marketing copy.
  4. Add 5mm of mental margin to length and thickness.
  5. If the card needs a 12V-2x6 connector, budget for a 90-degree adapter unless you've confirmed the clearance.

Why we set the limit where we did

267mm and dual-slot isn't an arbitrary ceiling — it's the consequence of a decision we made deliberately. Supporting 2.5- and 3-slot cards means widening the case across its full length, and that width would be sitting empty for the majority of builders who pair a compact case with a mid-range card.

The cards that fit the SuperAir are the cards that dominate actual sales, and they're the ones that make sense in a machine designed to be carried. You get the full performance of a 5060 Ti or a 9060 XT with no riser cable, no low-profile cooler compromise, and no thermal penalty, in 12 litres.

That's the trade. It's the right one for most people, and it's the wrong one for some, and the point of this article is to help you work out which you are before you spend the money.
